How to Upgrade LED Strip Lengths on a WLED Controller

If you’ve added longer LED strips to your Luminescence kit, you might notice that only part of the strip lights up or that patterns stop part-way.
That’s because a WLED controller is set with default LED counts, and if you extend a strip, you must tell the controller how many LEDs (or LED groups) it’s now driving.

The good news: adjusting the settings only takes a few minutes.

LED Density by Kit Type

Different Luminescence kits use different LEDs per metre and, for some V2 kits, grouping (3 LEDs per pixel).
When calculating the new LED count, multiply the strip length (metres) by the LEDs per metre (or groups per metre for V2 kits):

V1 Street Series: 30 LEDs/m Individual pixel control

V1 Pro Series: 60 LEDs/m Individual pixel control

V1 Elite Series: 60 LEDs/m Individual pixel control

V2 Pro Series: 60 LEDs/m Grouped in 3 LEDs per pixel

V2 Elite Series: 60 LEDs/m Grouped in 3 LEDs per pixel

Example calculations:

  • V1 Street Series: 1.5 m × 30 = 45 LEDs

  • V1 Pro/Elite Series: 2 m × 60 = 120 LEDs

  • V2 Pro/Elite Series: 2 m × 60 ÷ 3 = 40 controllable groups (but still 120 physical LEDs)

Tip: For V2 kits, WLED needs the number of groups, not the total physical LEDs.
So if you fit 2 m of V2 Pro or V2 Elite strip, set the controller to 40 pixels, not 120.

What You’ll Need

  • Your phone, tablet, or laptop

  • The WLED app (iOS/Android) or a web browser

  • Your WLED controller powered on and connected to Wi-Fi

Step 1 – Connect to Your WLED Controller

  1. Make sure the controller is powered and on the same Wi-Fi network as your device.

  2. Open the WLED app.

    • Using a browser instead? Enter the controller’s IP address (for example http://4.3.2.1) in the address bar.

Step 2 – Open LED Preferences

  1. In the app menu (☰), select Config.

  2. Tap LED Preferences (sometimes labelled LED Setup).

This is where you set the LED or pixel count for each output.

Step 3 – Adjust the LED (or Pixel) Count

  1. Find LED Outputs (or Segment Length).

  2. For each output you’ve extended, enter the correct number based on your kit:

    Formula:

    • V1 Street Series: Length (m) × 30

    • V1 Pro / V1 Elite Series: Length (m) × 60

    • V2 Pro / V2 Elite Series: Length (m) × 60 ÷ 3 (because of 3-LED grouping)

    Examples:

    • 2 m V1 Street Series = 60 LEDs

    • 2 m V1 Pro / V1 Elite Series: = 120 LEDs

    • 2 m V2 Pro / V2 Elite Series: = 40 groups (pixels)

Step 4 – Save and Reboot

  1. Scroll down and press Save & Reboot.

  2. The controller restarts, and your extended strip should now light correctly across its full length.

Quick Troubleshooting

  • Only part of the strip lights up → Double-check LED/pixel count and grouping.

  • Random colours or flicker → Make sure your power supply can handle the extra current from the longer strip.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re running a Street 30 LED/m kit, a 60 LED/m V1 Pro/Elite, or a grouped 60 LED/m V2 Pro/Elite, increasing strip length is simple:
just update the WLED LED or pixel count to match your new total.

Taking a minute to do this ensures every diode—or every 3-LED group on V2 kits—glows perfectly.
